Zephyr varieties

Examples of kittens at homing age
(note that the colours will darken and become richer with age, and agouti based colours develop stronger orange tones in adulthood.)

Rats which don't exhibit any colour genes are either black or agouti. My breeding plans centre around rats exhibiting the american mink gene
(sometimes also referred to as mock mink), some rats will be agouti based (mink agouti is known as cinnamon).
Some of the rats will be chocolate based, and any chocolate based american rats will have ruby eyes. Consequently most Zephyr litters for the american line will include:
black (not always very black!)
agouti (all agouti based rats have paler bellies):
american mink
american cinnamon
chocolate (sadly my chocs often look more like light blacks)
chocolate agouti
chocolate american mink
chocolate american cinnamon

One secondary line is based around platinum, which is the result of combining the american gene with pale british blue and a modifier giving red eyes.
If the modifier is not present, then the darker eyed result is quicksilver. Pale british blue rats may also appear from time to time, and if combined with chocolate, then it becomes lilac.
If all three genes are expressed (american mink, pale british blue, and chocolate), the rat will be so pale that it counts as a pink eyed white (PEW).

Another secondary line is for havana and havana agouti, which means chocolate american mink or cinnamon carrying the buff/topaz gene (the red eye dilute gene, denoted by 'r'). These have a paler creamier tone to their coat and lighter eyes than the straight chocolate americans do.
It is possible that buff or topaz based rats will appear in some litters although I hope to minimise the chance of this as such rats can have slow clotting times if they get injured.
These are normally ruby eyed, but any that are also expressing american and/or chocolate will be diluted to a lighter coat and paler eyes.

I'm now establishing a silvermane line which is a coat type resulting in silver tips to the hairs, sometimes a facial mask effect when the base coat is dark enough, and a silky texture.
The silvering comes and goes, so although a kitten may look heavily silvered, they are likely to look less striking as an adult.

Some litters will include dumbos, and most rats will have some degree of silvering which will come and go through their life.
